What is Love?
Everyone has an opinion of what love is. The Greeks had many forms of love of which can be compressed into a few. The first is Storge or a feeling of affection. Next is Philia or a feeling of kinship or friendship. Further we find Eros or a feeling of intimacy or passion (sexual). Finally at the center of all life is what love really is, true love, which is Agape or unconditional love.
Humans should work toward Agape love keeping in mind that humans cannot be truly unconditional loving. We cannot fully achieve unconditional love as humans are rational beings therefore lacking the ability to be non-judgmental. Another term for Agape love is Grace. God or the ultimate and final power in the universe is the only entity capable of Grace.
It is this awareness that provokes my need to turn to God to achieve the love I need for myself in fulfilling the metaphysical law that we must, "Love our neighbors as ourselves." I have always loved my neighbor as myself in that when I had little or no respect for myself I judged others with the same line of rational thinking.
God has never judged me so the idea that God judges us has been perpetuated by perceiving God within human limitations. I believe, "Man sees God as man. God sees man as gods." I know that God has loved me unconditionally throughout my self-destructive life. It has been my not living up to my own expectation by my judgement that has created my guilt and shame. I don't need to ask God for his forgiveness I must stop judging myself and others and use God's love or Grace as a template for loving. And when all else fails I try to remember...
